Denis Santry

A well-known Irish architect from M/s. Swan & MacLaren who designed one of Singapore’s famous landmarks, the Sultan Mosque, which was completed in 1928. Denis Santry was born in 1879 in County Cork, Ireland, and came to Singapore in 1919. He joined Swan and MacLaren as an architect and by 1926, was a partner in the firm. Some of the other iconic buildings and monuments designed by him include the World War I Memorial (Cenotaph), Hongkong and Shanghai Bank and Union Buildings at Collyer Quay, Majestic Theatre and Prinsep Street Presbyterian Church.  During  his time in Singapore, he was also active in Singapore society, as an avid cartoonist and as President of St Patrick’s Society. He retired in 1934 and returned to England, then thereafter to South Africa in 1945 where he passed away in 1960.
