Dato' Dr Ikmal Hisham Albakri graduated with a Diploma in Architecture from Sheffield University in 1956. In 1962, he received another Diploma in Tropical Architecture from the AA School Architecture in the United Kingdom.

In 1964, he became the Executive Director of Kumpulan Arkitek Sdn. Bhd., He was appointed President of the Malaysian Institute of Architects from 1967 to 1969 and 1973 to 1975. He was also the President of the Commonwealth Association of Architects from 1987 to 1989 and was the Vice President of the International Union of Architects after 1999.
