It is unclear when Hollands arrived in South Africa, but it appears that by about 1883 he was working for the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT in Port Elizabeth. Hollands appears to have trained in England under Charles Chapman from 1863 until 1868, after which he was assistant to "Mr Gwyther" from 1868 to 1874. He was asked to create the blueprints for a Cottage Hospital in Uitenhage in 1898, but he became unwell. Despite paying him a fee, the committee eventually asked someone else to create the blueprints. He is listed as practicing architecture in Port Elizabeth from the same address as HW WALKER in the RIBA Kalendars of 1901–1902 and 1902–1903 and as deceased in the RIBA Kalendar of 1903–1904.
