Amancio d'Alpoim Miranda Guedes is a talented artist who also works as an architect and a sculptor. Many people are familiar with him as Pancho Guedes. He was born in Portugal in 1925, and he spent the majority of his extremely creative life there. There, he created more than 500 building ideas, with some of them going on to be realized in Angola, South Africa, and Portugal. He is not as widely known as he should be in the rest of the world due to this and other factors. His flamboyant, eclectic, intricate, and thoughtful buildings and projects have occasionally been published, but because they diverged so much from the post-World War II commercial multinational styles of architecture led by the US, their quality and originality have not been sufficiently acknowledged. No matter how diverse the results initially look, his visual imagination absorbed every influence, from the art of Africa to the Surrealists, and synthesized them into a style that is instantly recognizable as his own. He was a post-modernist 20 years before the phrase was coined, and he is still quite active. He is currently working in Portugal, constructing new structures and creating a residence on a rocky hillside close to Sintra.
