The disciples and adherents of Muhammad who saw or encountered him while he was still alive, while being a Muslim, and were physically in his presence were known as the Companions of the Prophet.
Later Islamic scholars accepted their testimony regarding Muhammad's words and acts, the occasions of the Quran's revelation, and other significant elements of Islamic tradition and history. The foundation of the growing Islamic tradition was the companions' testimonies, which were transmitted through reliable narrators (isnads). The Muslim way of life (sunnah), the law that should govern Muslim communities (sharia), and the jurisprudence (fiqh) are all derived from the traditions (hadith) of the life of Muhammad and his companions.
